Today, over two million people use our service – saving more than £2m every day by using TransferWise rather than their bank. It is a huge responsibility already! Still, we are driven by a mission that goes way beyond: “Money without borders – instant, convenient, transparent and eventually free”. From this perspective, in many ways, we are just getting started.
In our pursuit, the technology platform we build also needs to become Mission-Driven: Reliable, Scalable and Resilient. Currently, our predominantly JVM-powered micro-service ecosystem is in the middle of an exciting journey towards true platform independence. We are happy to share our key learnings from performing a tectonic paradigm shift in our operations: from managed physical hardware located in German data centers towards a scalable, interoperable, automated and vendor-agnostic infrastructure.
We are redesigning our infrastructure stack from the ground up, starting with AWS first, tailoring together a modern independent platform pipeline: adopting Terraform for declarative blueprinting, Ansible for procedural provisioning, Kubernetes for containerized application orchestration, connecting services into a mesh via Envoy Proxy, while leveraging the Spring Cloud and other ecosystem solutions to ensure a controlled migration process, all while continuously serving our customers in transferring more than £1.5 billion every month!
